My WHY’s of Real Estate
My “WHYS” of Real Estate
One of the most common questions people who study real estate are encouraged to ask themselves is “What is your WHY for real estate investing?”
This question needs to be differentiated from the question “WHY do you invest in real estate?”
I will give you my answers to both these questions in this blog. Hopefully, from these answers, you can see why I love real estate investing and have developed such a huge passion for teaching others about how real estate investing can change your life.
So, let me address the first question, “What is your WHY for real estate investing?” or simply put… “What’s your WHY?”
When addressing this question what we are really trying to answer is this: What do you want real estate to accomplish for you and what does that feel like?
When I started studying real estate investing, I was a member of REIN (Real Estate Investment Network), a company based out of BC that focused on real estate education, research, and analysis. At that time in my life, they were just what I needed to get started in real estate, and I owe a ton of my experience to them.
One of the first things REIN had me do when I started was to get a clear definition of what my “WHY” was. One of the best ways to do this was through a picture collage. Below is a photo of the very first collage I made over ten years ago. A picture is worth 1000 words. This collage hangs in front of my desk in my office to this day and serves as a clear reminder of my WHY.
My WHY
Below is a brief paragraph of how I describe my WHY today.
I look forward to waking up at our cottage in Muskoka each morning, sipping a hot cup of coffee before heading out on a walk to listen to some scripture and audible books. I spend some time being thankful for how I have been blessed and start thinking of ways I need to serve people that day. Dorli and I then look forward to a morning boat ride together while our kids are busy looking after the family real estate business. I make some calls to some people looking for solutions to make life easier and thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to teach and mentor these folks in a meaningful way. My afternoon consists of slipping in 9 holes of golf or planning our next getaway to Europe as a couple. I then look forward to spending some family time over some great food and fun conversations followed by some recreation on the water, watching a spectacular sunset settle on the horizon. My day is complete. I spend some time being grateful for how I have been blessed and look forward to repeating this the next day.
This is what real estate has created for me! It’s what I reflect on every single day and the reason it’s fun to get out of bed every day.
Now let’s deal with the second question. WHY do I invest in real estate?
Real estate creates a tremendous legacy for me, my family, and the people around me. This is constantly evolving and changing each day, and I find that gets more and more exciting every day as well.
Real estate focuses on getting out of the rat race of a JOB and creating enough income while we sleep to meet our living expenses to create financial freedom (where we don’t need a JOB anymore)
Real estate is generational. It can be passed onto the next generation. I often tell people we are now playing a real live game of Monopoly with our four kids around the table.
Real estate allows me to make money in many different ways. There is a definite Cash Flow aspect to real estate investing and also a very important Capital Gain side to investing. The beauty of this is that you can have both Cash Flow AND Capital Gains when you invest in real estate.
Real Estate is easily leveraged. Banks will lend you money easily for real estate because the banks see real estate as a very secure, low-risk, highly controlled investment. What other investment will the bank lend you up to 95% of the purchase price to buy the asset?
Real estate allows investors to become entrepreneurs rather than simply employees. Entrepreneurs use their money and debt as their employees to make money for their own gain. Employees trade their time for money, all for somebody else’s gain.
Real estate allows for a high level of control over the investment made. Unlike other investments like stocks, bonds, mutual funds, efts, etc., you have a relatively high level of control for the performance of the real estate you purchase.
Real estate is diversified. There are many different kinds of real estate to invest in. Single-family homes, suited homes, multifamily homes, land development, commercial properties are few examples. It takes some time to figure out what kind of real estate suits you best.
Real estate is something more than just a piece of paper. It’s a great feeling to be able to go to a property and say: “I own that dirt” or “that’s my house.” Investing in real estate provides a real sense of pride of ownership and accomplishment. It’s real, you can actually touch what you own. That feels good!
