Changing Your Mindset To Think Like An Entrepreneur
Wednesdays are always slated on my iCalendar as marketing days / education days / capital raising days. This is my favourite day of the week!
Today is Wednesday!!!
Financial Education for people has become one of my biggest passions in life… especially for youth. I love teaching people things they haven’t learned in school or been taught by parents. These lessons can make a significant difference in the lives of people willing to learn. It’s exciting to see people evolve in their thinking about some financial decisions they face in life or from being challenged to think outside the box of what is comfortable to them.
Most of you will likely be familiar with “Mr Wonderful” , Kevin O’Leary. He is certainly in our social media circles and has a unique, somewhat brash at times way of communicating what is on his mind. If you can get past the way O’Leary delivers his message and allow yourself to listen to what he is saying, I find that he has a ton of wisdom for us to learn from.
One of his quotes on Instagram really made me stop and reflect this week. This was his quote.
“A salary is the drug they give you to forget your dreams.”
When I read that over a few times and let it really sink in, I believe it has the effect of encouraging you to ask yourself some pretty challenging questions.
Most of our education and life experience is focussed on becoming an employee. When you are an employee you are often trapped into working your life for someone else to achieve financial freedom…. for the people you work for. We can get wrapped up into a repetitive routine, day and after day after day working for 40 plus years until we retire and often rely on what the government hands out. This is truly the way the majority of Canadians live. This doesn’t have to be you!!
In my mind there is a better way! Our education, our thinking, our goal setting and our DREAMS can all come from our ability to think like an entrepreneur rather than an employee. The younger we learn this lesson, the quicker we can achieve financial freedom and security in life. This is why my focus for financial education is targeted toward youth. Our kids need to learn this lesson at a very early age.
Some of you may ask … What is the difference between an employee and an entrepreneur?
Simply put…
An employee is someone who trades time for money.
An entrepreneur is someone who learns to have money work work for them as their employee.
My challenge to all of you is to stop and think about what you are learning, what you are reading, what you are thinking, what are you pursuing, what are you stuck on and how are you to chasing financial freedom and security? Take some inventory in your mind about these questions and figure out if it is time to make some changes. Is your focus on being an employee or are you learning to become an entrepreneur?
Don’t get caught in the trap of having a salary stop you from chasing your dreams!!!
I will leave you with a Warren Buffet quote…
“If you think being an entrepreneur is risky, try working for someone else for 40 years and living off Social Security.”
We are always here to help and educate people willing to learn, make some positive changes in their lives and focus on ways to become an entrepreneur!
