You Are What You Think

The older I get, the more I really have come to understand that we all have a say in the kind of person we want to become. Nowadays, there are so many people who are using excuses to justify how they are feeling and what they believe. The truth is we all get a choice to make the right decisions on who we choose to become. In other words, you are what you think, and we all have the choice to determine what we think.

There are four things that I find helpful to remember when I am working to control what I think. These thoughts may be helpful for you:

  1. Be careful what you allow yourself to think about. You are the gatekeeper of your mind. You get a vote about what you allow yourself to think about. The life you lead will flow from your heart, so fill your heart with good things. “Think about things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent or praiseworthy” (Philippians 4:13). When you choose to allow yourself to think about these things, good things flow out of you!

  2. Your words are powerful; use them very carefully. What we say is the outward expression of what we think. The words we use should have three gatekeepers: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?

  3. Be careful what you allow yourself to look at. Yup, I am refereeing to those darn phones of ours. What you look at goes directly to your brain to determine what you think about. As a result, we need to be extremely careful about what we decide to look at, to Google, to search, scroll, who we follow, what we read, what sites become our favourites, and on and on. In this day and age, our phones have taken over our lives so we need to take extra caution about what we allow ourselves to look at on these addictive devices. Jesus warned us that if you look at the wrong things, your whole body will be full of darkness. But he also said, if your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. (Matthew 6:22-23)

  4. You are who you hang around so choose your friends very carefully. It’s often said that you become like the five people you hang around with the most. In my world, they have to be people who inspire me, who are unselfish, who have an attitude toward serving others, who put others before themselves, and who are very generous with the gifts that have been given to them.

Mindset, to me, sets the stage for who we become. We all get to choose how we think, which determines who we become. Make your choices wisely!!
