The Importance of Character and Reputation
Warren Buffet, one of the greatest investors in the world is quoted as saying “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you will do things differently.”
I can’t emphasize the importance of reputation in every aspect of our lives. We only have one reputation and we need to guard it very very carefully. One single event can mess up our reputation for the rest of our lives and that event can happen so quickly.
It’s our character that builds our reputation. Who we are determines how we are perceived.
The good news is that we are the only ones who can control our character and thus our reputation.
Here are a few great quotes for us on the topic of character and reputation.
“Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.”
Abraham Lincoln
“You can’t build a reputation on what you are going to do.”
Henry Ford
“Be more concerned with your character than your reputation.”
John Wooden
“The way to gain a good reputation is to endeavour to be what you desire to appear”
Socrates
“A brand for a company is like a reputation for a person. You earn reputation by trying to do hard things well”
Jeff Bezos
Here is what the Bible has to say about a good reputation…
Proverbs 22:1
A good reputation and respect are worth much more than silver and gold.
My challenge to you is to take some time to examine your own character and the reputation you are building in the eyes of the people around you. I trust that will be time well spent.
